Role Purpose
The Mechanical & Hydraulic Inspector is responsible for inspecting, monitoring, and verifying all mechanical, hydraulic, rotating, and machinery‑related systems during the construction of Boskalis vessels at Fujian South East Shipyard and outsourced subcontractor facilities. The role ensures compliance with project specifications, vessel‑specific Flag State and Classification Society requirements (BV and ABS), OEM documentation, machinery installation standards, and Boskalis internal quality procedures.
The inspector will work closely with experienced Boskalis site personnel during the initial period to gain full understanding of Boskalis quality expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Equipment Installation
Inspect installation of main engines, auxiliary engines, gearboxes, shaft lines,steering gear, pumps, and deck machinery.
Verify alignment, foundations, chocking, and bolting processes in accordance with Class and OEM requirements.
Monitor machining tolerances, bearing fits, coupling alignment, and seal installations.
Check mechanical construction works against approved drawings, P&IDs, systems chematics, and specifications.
Verify correct routing and support of mechanical piping, hoses, and tubing.
Hydraulic Systems
Inspect installation of hydraulic power units (HPUs), cylinders, actuators,winches, thrusters, and related components.
Confirm cleanliness, flushing, and pressure testing of hydraulic systems per OEM and Class requirements.
Validate hose assemblies, fittings, and pipework for correct materials, dimensions,and installation.
Witness functional tests, calibration, and adjustments of hydraulic equipment.
Verify filtration, oil quality, and contamination control compliance.
System Testing & Commissioning
Witness pressure tests, flushing records, torqueing logs, and alignment checks.
Attend mechanical and hydraulic system function tests, FATs, HATs, and SATs wherere quired.
Verify correct integration with electrical and automation systems.
Confirm that all mechanical equipment complies with approved maker lists and project specifications.
Ensure as‑built documentation is collected and validated for machinery systems.
Vessel‑Specific Flag and Class Responsibilities
Ensure all machinery and hydraulic systems complywith the vessel’s Flag State regulations and ClassificationSociety requirements (BV and ABS).
Coordinate Class surveys for machinery installation,pressure testing, shafting, steering gear, and hydraulic equipment.
Review and verify:
Class‑approved machinery drawings
System diagrams (mechanical/hydraulic)
Material certificates and Type Approvals
OEM manuals and installation guidelines
Follow up on all Flag and Class comments untilresolved.
Confirm that all machinery, valves, pumps, andcomponents meet Flag and Class certification requirements.
Boskalis Procedures & Quality Standards
Implement Boskalis Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical and hydraulic systems.
Prepare daily inspection reports, punch lists, NCRs, and documentation in line with Boskalis formats.
Verify compliance with Boskalis commissioning protocols and handover requirements.
Participate in internal quality meetings, audits, and system readiness reviews.
Uphold Boskalis SHE‑Q standards on site, reporting unsafe acts and conditions.
Support continuous improvement activities and maintain structured inspection records.
Coordination & Communication
Liaise daily with Shipyard supervisors, subcontractors, OEM representatives,Class surveyors, and Boskalis site team members.
Communicate deviations clearly and professionally in English and Chinese.
Provide clear photographic reporting and technical follow‑up documentation.
Work closely with experienced Boskalis mechanical inspectors during the initial knowledge transfer period.
Requirements
Education & Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in newbuilding or installation of mechanical/hydraulic systems on offshore vessels, workboats, dredgers, or similar ships.
Strong background in marine machinery, hydraulic equipment, and system testing.
Experience working with Chinese shipyards is preferred.
Technical certificates in mechanical systems, hydraulics, or marine engineering arean advantage.
Skills & Competencies
Proficiency in English and Chinese (Mandarin) — spoken and written.
Strong ability to interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, hydraulic schematics,and OEM manuals.
Knowledge of Class requirements for machinery installations.
Solid understanding of alignment, chocking, flushing, pressure testing, and commissioning processes.
Strong communication, reporting, and problem‑solving skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and collaboration tools such as SharePoint.
Personal Attributes
Willingness to learn and adopt Boskalis’ high-qualitystandards.
Detail‑oriented, proactive, and reliable in follow‑up.
Able to work independently and within aninternational team structure.
Preferably residing in or near Fuzhou, orwilling to relocate.
Willingness to travel to subcontractor facilities forinspections.
Working Conditions
Based primarily at Fujian South East Shipyard, Fuzhou.
Occasional travel to OEM or subcontractor workshops outside the yard.
Long‑term position supporting multiple Boskalis newbuild projects.
